Reading to Your Baby Increases Vocabulary

July 10th, 2009 ~ No Comments

By Krista Guerrero

Studies have shown that the amount of language a baby hears before their 2nd birthday can have a dramatic impact on their future. The reason for this is because beginning at birth; your baby is learning language at an accelerated rate. The more you expose your baby to language, the broader their vocabulary and the better their comprehension will be. Research suggests that the more advanced a person’s vocabulary, the more they will progress in life. Those who can easily use language are able to rise to the top in school and in their careers.

To begin laying a strong foundation in vocabulary, begin reading to your child as early as possible. Reading to your baby will offer you the opportunity to introduce new words that you would not otherwise encounter in your day-to-day life. Babies that are read to regularly develop larger vocabularies and better grasp the meaning of words. Speak to your baby often and about everything. The more language your baby hears, the faster their language skills will develop. Be sure to include lots of adjectives in your conversations. You can describe colors you see and the shapes of objects you encounter. Your baby is like a sponge, ready to absorb all that you have to offer. It requires no effort for your baby to learn. Your baby is wired to learn at birth and is absorbing all that is around them. Your baby is looking to be stimulated and wants to know how everything works. Babies are the best students, always looking to learn something new.

Four simple ways to surround your baby with language are:

Read to your baby. Begin reading to your baby at birth and you will be giving your child a huge advantage in life. Your child will understand the written word at a deeper level than children who were not read to. Your baby will have an easier time learning to read, because words will be familiar to your child.

Talk to your baby about everything. Remember that your baby is an intellectual, wanting to learn for the sake of it. Satisfy your baby’s curiosity by talking to them continuously.

Sing to your baby. There is a reason that parents sing lullabies to their babies. Babies love to learn language in a singsong manner. By singing to your baby you are stimulating them as you teach them language and vocabulary.

Recite your favorite nursery rhymes to your baby. You can do this anywhere, as I am sure you can easily think of several nursery rhymes you know by heart. Your baby will delight in hearing the rhyming patterns of language.

All of these tips are easy to incorporate into your day and will benefit your baby greatly.
